Make a list of chores, not features
Vacuuming loose dry debris and cleaning a floor with water are different tasks. Decide which one you are trying to make easier before comparing robot features. A combination machine can be appealing, but its mopping function should have a clear role in your household rather than being an automatic upgrade.
This is a decision guide. We have not compared cleaning performance across mop systems or tested whether a particular robot is appropriate for your flooring.
Check the floor maker’s instructions
List your hard floors, carpets and rugs, then check their permitted cleaning methods. Do not assume that “hard floor” means any amount of water or any cleaning solution is suitable. If you rent, verify the care requirements for the property’s materials where needed.
The robot’s instructions matter too. Confirm which surfaces it may mop, what liquid is permitted and how carpets must be handled. Product families can use different systems, and a similar app does not mean identical protection for rugs.
Understand the carpet arrangement
Some models rely on exclusion zones or another specific setup to avoid mopping carpet. Others offer different hardware or modes. Read the exact instructions rather than inferring the behavior from the word “combo.” Roborock’s Q5 Pro+ manual, for example, specifies precautions for carpets when the mopping module is fitted.
Mark each rug and threshold in your apartment plan. If the required arrangement would need constant manual changes, decide whether that is acceptable. A feature that is useful in an open hard-floor room may be less convenient in a room with several small rugs.

Compare the after-use workload
Ask what happens to the pad or roller after cleaning and what the dock actually does. Read the procedure for any clean-water tank, dirty-water tank and tray. “Automatic” can describe one step without covering all the care involved.
A vacuum-only robot may leave you with a simpler station and a separate manual mopping routine. A combination model may reduce one floor chore while adding water-system care. Compare those complete routines at the current price, rather than counting features on a retailer’s comparison graphic.
What a self-emptying dock does and does not automate is covered in whether a self-emptying dock is worth it.
Choose the simplest system that covers the job
If your main frustration is everyday loose fur, begin by evaluating dry pickup, access and brush care. If compatible hard-floor cleaning is also important, compare combination models with a realistic understanding of their maintenance and exclusions.
Keep the target budget visible and leave room for consumables. You do not need the most automated station to make a useful purchase. You need a machine whose supported use matches your floors and a care routine you are willing to perform.

A two-room example
Imagine an apartment with a compatible kitchen floor and a living room dominated by rugs. The kitchen may give a mopping feature a clear job. The living room raises a separate access and carpet-handling question. Do not average those rooms into a vague description such as “mixed floors” and assume any combination robot will suit both.
Write the required mode and restrictions beside each room. Then ask how much manual setup is needed to move between them. If the supported process requires changes you will rarely remember to make, a simpler vacuum-only routine plus separate floor care may be more workable. Choose around the daily actions you will actually perform, not the maximum number of functions printed on the box.
