Our guides explain the trade-offs behind a purchase. Read our disclosure.
Buy for the floor you actually have
An apartment’s square footage tells only part of the story. A small home with several rugs, chair legs and loose pet toys can be more complicated for a robot than a larger open room. Begin with a sketch of your floors and the places where fur collects.
This is a shopping framework, not a tested product ranking. We have not measured pickup, navigation or noise for the robots mentioned in our sources, and a higher price is not automatically the solution to your home’s layout.
A budget example: the Roomba 105 Combo configurations
For a concrete starting point, compare the Roomba 105 Combo Y314020 with its charge-only base and the Y354020 AutoEmpty bundle. Manufacturer prices checked November 5, 2026 were $169.99 and $269.99 on promotion, respectively. The dock bundle’s listed regular price was $469.99, so it belongs in a $100–$400 shortlist only while the actual offer fits your ceiling.
Both offer LiDAR mapping and vacuum/mop modes; the relevant difference is bin-handling automation. This is not a pet-hair performance award. Brush care, access and evidence of pickup on your floor still matter.
| Configuration | What you get | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 105 Combo Y314020 | Charge-only base; empty robot bin yourself | Lower purchase price and simpler station |
| 105 Combo Y354020 | AutoEmpty dock with dust bag | Less frequent bin handling, more dock space and bags |
| Either configuration | Robot height listed as 4.09 inches for Y314020 | Measure under furniture rather than assume low-profile access |
Separate floors, access and obstacles
List hard flooring, carpet and rugs separately, then mark low furniture, door thresholds and narrow passages. Measure the spaces that matter to your home. Check the robot’s published dimensions and its supported surfaces against that list. Do not assume a model will fit underneath a sofa because its body looks slim in a photograph.
Next, identify movable obstacles such as toys, cords and clothing. Mapping, obstacle avoidance and app controls are different features. Verify the exact model’s capabilities rather than treating “smart navigation” as a complete description.
Treat pet hair as a maintenance question too
Read how the main brush is removed and cleaned. Check the ends of the roller, the supplied tool and replacement-part availability. eufy’s pet-hair guidance specifically notes that long hair can require more frequent roller attention. A claim about reduced tangling should not be read as a promise of no maintenance.
Think about who will do that work and where. If the proposed routine seems awkward, compare another design before purchasing. An easy-to-understand care process can matter more to daily satisfaction than an extra app feature.
Measure the entire docking arrangement
A compact robot can come with a substantial dock. Read the placement instructions and allow for approach space, power access and opening the dock to replace consumables. Do not make a hidden cupboard part of the plan unless the manufacturer’s requirements are genuinely met there.
If the budget is $100–$400, prioritize the functions that solve your main problem. Keep an upper price limit and compare the exact offers available at purchase time. Avoid choosing a more expensive mopping system simply because it has the longest feature list.
Write a realistic success test
Define what a useful first week would look like: the robot reaches your intended rooms, returns to its base and reduces the loose hair you normally find. Keep a regular vacuum available for tasks outside the robot’s supported use.
Check the current seller, model number, warranty and return terms before ordering. The right purchase is a robot you can use safely and maintain consistently in your actual apartment. A clear task list is a better starting point than looking for a universal winner.
